Here’s how it works: hormonal changes increase sebum production in the hair follicle, resulting in a blocked pore. This creates an anaerobic (oxygen-free) environment. The anaerobic environment is the perfect breeding ground for P. acnes bacterium, the main cause for acne breakouts. As they reproduce, colonies form and release a chemical known as porphyrin. Optimal light wavelengths, especially green and red, penetrate deep into the follicle to target the P. acnes and trigger porphyrin activation. Green light causes the porphyrin molecules to release lone oxygen radicals. The oxygen radicals attack the P. acnes and destroy it. Red light produces anti-inflammatory results and reduces swelling. The additional heat intensifies the process and gently opens the pores to release the clog and soothe the inflammation.
